STRUTHERS, Ohio - Mahoning County judge candidate Anthony D'Apolito is expressing outrage after learning the son of one his campaign volunteers is a registered a sex offender and drove a truck in the Struthers Fourth of July parade Monday with his family in the back.

“I've worked 25 years to get to this point by helping kids and by protecting them and I'm not going to be associated with someone that doesn't do that, not for a second.”

Magistrate Anthony D'Apolito is talking about James Bares, 41, who was arrested after driving a truck representing the D'Apolito campaign in Monday's Fourth of July parade in Struthers.

Bares is a registered sex offender. released from prison three months ago after pleading guilty to two counts of gross sexual imposition.

Bares was arrested because a condition of his parole was not to knowingly be in the vicinity of children.

D'Apolito wants to apologize to all who attended the parade.

“I don't want anyone on the Fourth of July to feel threatened with their children or not to enjoy the day. I take full responsibility, I'm the candidate, I didn't know this guy was going to be there, I didn't want him there, I didn't invite him there.”

D'Apolito says two cars were registered to be in the parade, Bares' truck was not.

Bares' father, is now a former volunteer in D'Apolito's campaign.

“I can't have that, that's not what being a candidate is about, that's not who I represent, that's not what I'm going to allow around me.”

D'Apolito says he will learn from this mistake and do a better job vetting people who want to help his campaign.

“When your running for office, everyone wants to help and you take it all as a great thing but now i have learned that you got to do your due diligence and you got to make sure that the people that you have helping you out represent who you are and he does not represent who I am, not even close, not even within the same zip code or the same country.”

Bares was taken into custody without incident and is in the Mahoning County Jail waiting a court appearance which has not been scheduled.
