NILES, Ohio - The Mayor of Niles was not in his office on Friday, but in a hospital room instead.

A city hall spokesperson confirmed on Friday that Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia admitted himself to a hospital for undisclosed reasons.

21 News reported earlier this week that mold had been found inside city hall, and that the Mayor and two city employees reported symptoms similar to those experienced by people exposed to mold.

It is unknown if Scarnecchia's hospitalization is related to those symptoms.

City leaders are trying to come up with the money needed to remove the mold and repair a leaky roof that is believed to be contributing to the growth of the mold.

While Scarnecchia is in the hospital, City Council President Robert Marino is serving in his absence.
