POLAND, Ohio - Plans to demolish a Poland school playground prompted some parents to take action.

North Elementary School's playground in Poland has seen better days.

Built 20 years ago, wear and tear has taken its toll on the aging equipment. So much so, that school administrators decided to have it dismantled.

Replacing the rubberized floor surface alone would cost tens of thousands of dollars.

"We're trying to maintain them the best that we can. We are trying to maintain them with the resources that we currently have. And making a decision in understanding the sensitivity that we aren't able to maintain all of the facilities that we currently have and that's why we are trying to reduce them." said Poland Superintendent David Janofa.

The other reason the school board wanted to dismantle the park was the fact it was built for 8-to-12-year-olds and North Elementary this fall will turn into a preschool only building.

But many people who live around the school frequent the park with their children.  They called the school and even started a petition to save the park.

"It's a lot of fun for them. There is always something for them to do here. They can run around. It's a nice neighborhood," said Jessica Shaffer.

The parents made an impact.

"We were scheduled to have it start Tuesday, the demolition. We stopped it because of the phone calls we were getting," said Janofa.

Now Poland schools are getting estimates on how much it would cost to fix or replace the playground equipment and add things that are more appropriate for younger children.

Parents even pledged to help raise money to fix up the park so it can stay in the community.
