YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A woman accused of killing a ten-week-old baby is sentenced to eight years in prison.

But the victim's parents say the sentence is not justice for killing a baby.

Prosecutors were recommending eleven years in prison for Traniqua Floyd of Atkinson Avenue in Youngstown after she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Floyd was babysitting ten-week-old Jamar Jones in December of 2013 along with four other young children when he became unresponsive.

The now 26-year-old called 911 begging for help to revive the baby, and her defense attorney Lou Defabio called the eight-minute emergency call heart-wrenching.

Youngstown police and paramedics were called to the Pasadena Avenue address and the baby was rushed to Akron Children's Beeghly Campus.  The child was then flown to the hospital's main campus in Akron where he later died.

Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer McLaughlin told the Judge, "The coroner does an examination of this baby to try and figure out what happened and concludes that the baby died of multiple blunt impact injuries to the head.  There's extensive head trauma."

The prosecutor goes on to say that the defendant repeatedly lied about what happened.  First telling authorities that one of the other small children in the home hurt the baby, then telling someone in the county jail that she had punched the baby, and also telling someone she was holding the baby and that she fell and dropped the baby."

But Floyd's attorney says she is very remorseful and is not out to deceive anyone.

Attorney Defabio says, however, there is one instance where she tells him and someone in the jail, "Her boyfriend was over there and was hitting her and hit the baby while she was holding the baby, and that she also fell.  I'm not sure that we're ever going to have an answer to what happened in there."

Then it was Floyd's turn to address the Judge and she said, "Your honor first I want to say sorry to the family of the victim in this crime.  Being without my children has shown me that Jamar Jones needed to be protected and I failed.  I'm sorry for the family, I'm sorry that the crime has ripped our families apart.  I don't want the divide between our families to continue.  Please make amends."

Floyd who has no criminal record has already served nearly three and a half years in jail while awaiting a resolution in the case.  That includes one year for being declared incompetent after being diagnosed with mental issues that include schizophrenia, hallucinations and hearing dead people.

Judge Maureen Sweeney sentenced Floyd to eight years in prison, and five years of post-release control or parole once she is released.

But the parents of the baby were not satisfied with the sentence.

The baby's mother Jasmine Nickerson telling 21 News,  This is crazy.  She gets eight years for killing a baby.  We were told his head injuries were major, equivalent to getting kicked in the head by a horse.
