LIBERTY TWP, Ohio - Liberty police were sent to the Belmont Avenue Denny's last Saturday around 6:30 A.M. after the restaurant received a strange phone call.
A worker told police the caller identified himself as "Mark Wolfinger," the chief financial officer of Denny's corporate office.
Wolfinger told the worker that the restaurant had been under investigation, and U.S. Marshals were on their way to conduct a federal audit on the business.
The worker said she asked Wolfinger to postpone the audit until her manager arrived, but he said things were already underway.
At that point, the worker followed Wolfinger's orders. She closed the Denny's down, went into the office and counted the cash drawers.
The worker told police Wolfinger asked how much money was in the drawers that she just counted, and about how much money the restaurant kept in their safe.
Wolfinger then asked the worker to go deposit money in the bank, a task that the manager of the store normally does.
The worker told police she began to get suspicious and refused to do what Wolfinger asked. She said he attempted multiple times to convince her to go to the bank, saying that if she didn't, everyone that worked at the restaurant would lose their jobs and the store would be closed down.
Wolfinger told the worker that if she did as he asked, she would be compensated accordingly and escorted out by a U.S. Marshall.
Officials say at this time the general manager came in and took the call.
When the manager asked who she was speaking with, Wolfinger told her he was a U.S. Marshall and then quickly hung up.
The manager attempted to trace the phone number Wolfinger called from, but could not do so successfully.
There is an F. Mark Wolfinger who is the chief financial officer of Denny's Restaurants, but the manager told police she thinks a fake Wolfinger called her restaurant.
The Denny's manager told police she is going to follow up on this call with Denny's corporate.
