New Castle animal park welcomes baby giraffe
The newest arrival at Living Treasures Animal Park in New Castle has quite the legacy of fame to live up to.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. - The newest arrival at Living Treasures Animal Park in New Castle has quite the legacy of fame to live up to. But many are sure that Calvin, the week-and-a-half old giraffe calf will 'measure up'.
Living Treasures says Calvin, who was born on Sunday, August 27th, already weighs in at a whopping 145 pounds, and a staggering 6'3" tall, has been bonding with his mother and is in good health.
Calvin has yet to make his public debut, but animal lovers will quickly recognize his family.
According to the park, Calvin's grandmother is none other than the international famous giraffe named April. Earlier this year, the internet fell in love with the expecting mother through live cameras.
People all across the globe were able to get in on the fun of watching April slowly wait out the birth of her calf, and their first days together. The internet sensation sparked human copycats (complete with giraffe masks), and an interest in baby animals all over.
Calvin's father is said to be a giraffe named Levi, who was born five years ago to his mother, the very same, internet famous April. Levi grew up at Living Treasures.
Calvin may be new to western Pennsylvania, but his claim to fame could have an impact on giraffes everywhere.
Living Treasures says they will hope that the birth will help generate local interest in giraffes, which have suffered a population drop of nearly 40% over the last 30 years.
Park owner and Director, Adam Guiher commented; "In celebration of the first giraffe calf born at our park, we plan to raise money for the Giraffe Conservation Foundation throughout this fall."
Custom Calvin the Giraffe and Living Treasures gift items will be available for purchase later this month to help giraffe in the wild.
Living Treasures is an interactive zoological park licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture, US Fish and Wildlife Services and the PA Game Commission. The park is a facility member of the Zoological Association of America.
Aside from giraffes, the park has over 400 animals of 70 different species which range from kangaroos to monkeys, lions and more.
