YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Tuesday is probably a night that an employee of a Youngstown business would like to forget after confrontations with shoplifters, one of whom became violent.
According to a police report, officers were first called at around 7 p.m. To the Family Dollar store on the 2200 block of Market Street after the cashier said she tried to stop a man who walked out of the store with items hidden under his shirt.
Police looked at surveillance video and say the suspect jumped into a car with a second man who had stolen a drink from the store's cooler.
The cashier was able to get the license plate from the getaway car, which police discovered had been stolen earlier.
The police report says the face of the driver can clearly be seen on the surveillance video.
About an hour later, the same cashier called police saying another suspected shoplifter threatened to kill her and struck her in the face with the back of his hand as she tried to stop him from leaving the store without paying for socks, shirts, chargers, and headsets.
The officer could still see a red mark on the face of the cashier, who said that the force of the blow nearly knocked her glasses off.
Police say the suspect ran away on St. Louis Avenue, leaving his getaway car behind at the store along with some of the stolen items inside.
The car was towed and police will further review surveillance video in both instances.
