With 100 percent of precincts in, Republican Troy Balderson pulled through Tuesday with a narrow lead, appearing to win Ohio's special election.
But CNN and The Associated Press are reporting the race may be too close to call.
Balderson and Democrat Danny O'Connor went head-to-head in what analysts called a closer-than-expected race.
As of Tuesday, Balderson lead by 1,754 votes. The count was 101,574 votes for Balderson and 99,820 votes for O'Connor.
If Balderson is announced the official winner, he will represent the state's 12th Congressional District, taking over for U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi, a Republican, who retired in January after nearly 18 years of service.
Balderson is a two-term Republican state senator who is trying to keep his party's control of the 12th District, which Republicans have held for nearly 35 years, according to The Associated Press.
According to Balderson's website, while serving in the State Senate, Balderson has voted to cut taxes by $5 billion and has helped to eliminate Ohio’s deficit. It continues saying that, with Balderson's leadership, Ohio has created 500,000 new jobs, helping drop unemployment across the state.
Balderson says he believes in protecting all life, Second Amendment rights and "getting government out of the way to Ohio’s job creators can grow without the restraints of government red tape."
President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence both endorsed Balderson and had been campaigning in Ohio for him.
President Trump has said Balderson loves the people of Ohio, the military, and the Second Amendment. Trump also said Balderson is strong on issues such as crime and border security.
