EAST PALESTINE, Ohio - An East Palestine man is lucky to be alive after fire crews took an ax to his basement window in order to pull him from his burning house.

Several fire stations were called out to the home on the 100 block of Vine Street at 10:50 a.m. Monday morning, where they found flames coming out of three sides of the home.

The fire chief told 21 News there was a man trapped in the basement and he had to take an ax and break open the glass block window in order to pull him out.

The man told crews he was in the basement when he heard his smoke detectors go off, went upstairs and saw the fire in his living room.

It took crews nearly two hours to get the fire under control and the house was heavily damaged.

However, the chief said there was no one else in the home at the time and no one was injured.

He said the five people who lived in the home are staying with a local family and the American Red Cross was called to help.

Even though the fire is under investigation, the chief said there is no reason to suspect foul play and the fire is not related to the arson from earlier this month.
