NEW CASTLE, Pa. - A GoFundMe has been set up for a Lawrence County high school football player who's suffering from a serious spinal injury.
Hayden Hamilton, a sophomore at Laurel High School and cornerback for the varsity football team, was injured during a game Friday night.
The fundraising page said he suffered from an impact that fractured the vertebrae in his neck. It says after the impact, he was lying motionless on the field. He was then airlifted to Pittsburgh's Children Hospital where he underwent a nine-hour surgery, the page said.
Community members held a prayer vigil at 6 p.m. Sunday in support of Hamilton at Spartan Stadium.
"He has gained some sensation into his stomach and they were able to pull the ventilator, so he was able to breathe on his own, so there were a lot of encouraging signs this afternoon," said Laurel Head Football Coach Brian Cooper.
His father, Chad Hamilton, posted on Facebook Saturday and said that his son was out of surgery. He said the doctors stabilized the vertebrae in his neck and have done their best to decompress his spinal cord. He said that "they are treating him as aggressively as they can to regain as much as possible."
There is more than $27,000 raised as of Sunday at 11:00 p.m, almost to its goal of $30,000.
"We know that he is a strong individual and he is going to pull through this and we just need to continue to show that love and support for him," said Cooper.
