YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Signs of an 89-year-old institution in Youngstown literally began to disappear Monday as workers covered the signs outside Northside Regional Medical Center.

A company blocked the existing signs with tarp-like coverings reading "Steward Health Center Youngstown", and "No Emergency Services".

The hospital on Gypsy Lane, which will fully cease operations on Thursday, had already closed its emergency room Monday morning, no longer taking emergency or labor and delivery admissions.

Actually, Wednesday is the last day of hospital operations since the official closing is scheduled to come at one minute past midnight early Thursday.

Hospital operators Steward Health Care says it has worked with medical personnel to ensure that Northside patients could move scheduled procedures to nearby hospitals.

Steward blames the closure on decreasing patient populations.

Senator Joe Schiavoni told 21 News that he has been assured that the clinic and medical offices in the building will remain open.

The hospital has been in operation since 1929.
