Niles police say Burroughs used vehicle as weapon
Niles police have issued a statement on the Royal Mall shooting that left one dead last week.

NILES, Ohio - Niles police say that Matthew Burroughs used his vehicle as a weapon in the officer-involved shooting that occurred last week.
When police confronted Burroughs at his apartment they stated that Burroughs used his car as a weapon and drove his vehicle towards the initial responding officers. That is when the officers shot at Burroughs and killed him.
Police say that on January 2 around 2:30 pm, Niles Municipal Court advised Niles police that Matthew Burroughs had two active warrants and he was in the lobby of the court. Burroughs then left the court while the court probation officer was following him and giving him commands to stop. According to authorities, Burroughs fled to his car in an attempt to leave the court.
According to the statement, the court probation officer attempted to stop Burroughs and opened the passenger side door. With the passenger side door still open, Burroughs put the car into reverse where he allegedly struck the court probation officer attempting to flee the court.
After police found out that Burroughs fled they traveled to his last known address, 53 Royal Mall.
Police say at 2:33 pm on January 2 an officer was on foot walking to Burroughs' apartment. Simultaneously an officer saw Burroughs' car coming off Moreland Dr. and onto Niles-Cortland Road. According to police, Burroughs' vehicle turned towards the initial responding officers and when they felt there was a threat to their safety they fired their service weapons. Officer's state that Burroughs used his vehicle as a weapon towards law enforcement.
Niles police say that they have never stated that Burroughs possessed or used a firearm as during the incident.
Witness statements and body worn camera video obtained by Niles police has been turned over to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Niles police also say that they will still not release the names of the officers involved until after the BCI investigation.
