AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio - Fernando's Wedgewood Pizza has another award to hang on the wall of its restaurant on South Raccoon Road in Austintown.

The Food Network has recognized the pizza place for its Brier Hill pizza.

The pie has been named in a Food Network article about 31 noteworthy regional pizza styles.

Described by the author as a pan-cooked round covered with a thick sauce, bell peppers and Romano cheese, the article says that the Brier Hill pizza is so popular in the Valley that when Pizza Hut opened its doors here, the chain felt compelled to add it to the menu.

In addition to Wedgewood Pizza, the article also mentions how St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Youngstown sells Brier Hill pizzas on Fridays to raise funds.

The article says that in order to get a Brier Hill pizza throughout the week, Wedgewood Pizza in Austintown is the place to go.

“Its flavorful rounds have a crisp golden-brown crust topped with all of the expected Brier Hill accouterments,” according to the Food Network.

According to the Wedgewood Pizza website, the restaurant's roots date back to 1967 when Pasquate “Patsy” Acconcia operated a pizza shop in Youngstown.

When he decided to make the move to the present Austintown location he took on a partner, Fernando Riccioni. For the next 20 years, Fernando and Patsy worked daily to develop the recipes they are still using today.

Fernando continues to carry on the tradition with the help of his daughters, Adelina and Filomena.

Also, helping out is Fernando’s son-in-law, Mike, his grandson Michael, granddaughters Jenna and Gabriella, and his nephew, Rick.
