BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio - The Mahoning County Sheriffs Department is worried about an upcoming sales tax levy renewal that may affect the department in a catastrophic way.

Sheriff Jerry Greene said that the .75% sales tax generates $25 million annually. The tax dollars fund critical justice fund departments including the sheriff, prosecutor and coroner offices.

This May, voters will decide if they want to renew the levy for another five years.

"This is one of those things where if this didn't get renewed and we went without those dollars I wouldn't even be able to explain how we would go about dismantling our agencies," said Greene.

According to Sheriff Greene, this levy funds the Mahoning County Sheriffs Department, the jail operation and allows the sheriffs department to continue to operate within Mahoning County at an efficient rate.
