A nationwide retailer that employs anywhere from 240 to 750 workers in the Valley supplying engraved gifts and keepsakes says it has struck a deal to “preserve many jobs”.
However, a news release from Things Remembered does not say how many of those jobs will be saved.
Things Remembered, which operates a Fulfillment Center in North Jackson as well as 500 retail stores including those at the Eastwood and Southern Park Mall, has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Included in that court filing is an offer from Illinois-based giftware and home décor company Enesco to operate the Things Remembered online, direct mail and business to business retail operations under the Things Remembered name.
Enesco wants to buy the Things Remembered Direct Business, which includes the North Jackson Fulfilment Center, as well as approximately 128 additional stores, subject to a right to add the remove stores with a 50 store minimum
Things Remembered employs 240 workers at the North Jackson Fulfillment and Distribution Center throughout the year and approximately 750 seasonal employees.
Things Remembered says in its bankruptcy filing that without a buyer it would likely need to close all of its stores and terminate the vast majority of its employees. 21 News contacted a designated spokesman for the deal who could not say if all employees will be retained.
"The sale to Enesco offers a compelling path forward for Things Remembered, its customers, employees, creditors, vendors, and other stakeholders," said Nelson Tejada, President and Chief Executive Officer of Things Remembered. "We will now build on our legacy as the leading omnichannel retailer focused on personalized gift merchandise. Among other growth initiatives, we plan to reinvest in our marketing and personalization technology, and to reinvent our in-store experience."
A notice issued a notice last month under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act saying it would have to terminate 125 workers at its Cleveland area headquarters without someone to buy the operations.
Things Remembered is seeking bankruptcy court approval for a severance and outplacement program to support impacted employees and incentives for store employees.
