STRUTHERS, Ohio - A Struthers woman has been charged in connection with a potentially explosive incident that police say threatened an entire neighborhood.

Sharon Conti, 53, was arrested Sunday at the Creed Street home she shares with her mother.

Responding to a call from the mom, police say they found an overwhelming odor of natural gas when they entered the home.

After making sure the mom was out of the home, police turned off their radios to prevent any sparks that might cause an explosion.

According to the police report, in order to prevent a catastrophic explosion that would put the neighborhood in jeopardy, one of the officers went into the basement with the mom's son-in-law who said he was a plumber and could shut off the gas.

Police say they found Conti on the basement floor while natural gas was spewing from a pipe behind the clothes dryer which had been pulled away from the wall.

The report says Conti suddenly lunged at the plumber, who pushed her away and continued walking toward the leaking gas pipe.

The police officer then wrestled with Conti who was allegedly kicking an and punching the officer.

As the struggle continued the furnace turned on, but the plumber managed to disable it before it could ignite the natural gas.

Once the gas was shut off, the officer struggling with Conti said he wanted to contact his partner, but couldn't because his radio had been turned off. However, the other officer heard the commotion in the basement and came down to help handcuff Conti who was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for psychological evaluation.

Conti's mother told police that her daughter became enraged after she refused her request for money.

According to the mom, Conti told her she was going to kill herself and take her mother with her. Conti then went into the basement with a bottle of liquor, according to the report.

The mom called police after smelling natural gas for about 25 minutes.

Conti was booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated arson, domestic violence, and assault on a police officer.

She was scheduled to answer the charges in Struthers Municipal Court on Friday.
