BOARDMAN, Ohio - This afternoon, the last Chevy Cruze was dropped off at Sweeney Chevrolet on Market Street.
In the trunk, there were signs made by workers who built the car. The dealership tells 21 News the vehicle will be detailed and ready for the car's new owner who at this time wishes to remain anonymous.
The car was initially destined to be shipped to a dealer in Florida, but Sweeney Chevrolet was able to make a dealer car swap, so the local owner was able to purchase the last Lordstown built Cruze.
The white 2019 model was the subject of countless pictures taken by UAW workers when the car moved along the assembly process.
UAW local and regional leaders aren't calling this the end. They're waiting on the outcome of a lawsuit filed by the union against GM and union contract talks in September to find out if they can secure another future product for the Lordstown facility.
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown said he spoke to the UAW international president about two weeks ago. While they remain hopeful, Brown said GM executives have been non-committal or worse in recent meetings.
He wants to see an electric car come to the Valley production line instead of that type of investment in Mexico.
