SEBRING, Ohio - A local police department wants homeowners to know that leaving lawn clippings on the street can cost them hundreds of dollars in fines.

A posting on the Sebring Police Department's Facebook page states that with warmer weather approaching, citizens are reminded that the Village has an ordinance that prohibits placing grass clippings in the road.

Police say those clippings can cause hazards to traffic and congest storm drains.

According to the village ordinance, anyone who puts leaves, earth, grass, or similar debris on a street is guilty of a minor misdemeanor with a $150 fine for the first offense.

If a person continues to put clippings on the road, each successive offense is considered a fourth degree misdemeanor punishable by a $250 fine.

The city of Warren has a similar ordinance which prohibits depositing leaves or grass clippings in manholes and catch basins.
