HERMITAGE, Pa. - An unusual story out of Hermitage. A woman in her 60s is accused of fleeing from police in a low speed pursuit.
Officers initially believed the suspect had been drinking and they used a taser on her for failing to follow police commands.
It was on Saturday morning just after 12:30 when a Hermitage Police Officer attempted to make a traffic stop on South Hermitage Road as he spotted a car driving with no headlights on.
But the person behind the wheel of the Chevy Cobalt didn't stop, so instead a low speed chase ensued with 64-year-old Margaret Kane who was traveling just 35 miles an hour, but allegedly refused to stop.
Hermitage Police Chief Eric Jewell says, "A lot of times slow speed chases there's a potential DUI involvement or mental health involvement."
Kane allegedly drove erratically through three communities then steered into a yard and a dead end road.
It was on Grandview Avenue where the suspect's car got stuck in the mud, the tire tracks were still evident. Officers say it was at that point that they jumped out of their police cruisers, pulled their guns and ordered Kane to exit her vehicle.
Kane according to police refused and officers used a tool to break her driver's side window, and later her passenger side window in an effort to get her to put her hands up and comply with police orders.
It was at that point that the Hermitage Officer said Kane yelled expletives at the officers and told them they're going to hell. Then she showed police the cross around her neck.
As police stood in front of her vehicle with their weapons drawn Kane allegedly put her foot on her accelerator in what officers believe was an attempt to flee the scene.
"There's a deadly reason why they're not stopping. Is it a deadly reason we're not sure? So we approach with extreme caution," Chief Jewell said.
A Farrell Police Officer assisting used his taser on Kane to get her into custody. Police say pill bottles were in her car in plain view and Kane reportedly told officers she needed a Xanax.
The Hermitage woman is now facing seven charges including DUI and Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer.
