Ursuline principal Matthew Sammartino announced the hiring of Michael Kernan as the head girls' basketball coach. 

Coach Kernan replaces Coach Vannessa Dickson. 

Coach Kernan has long been affiliated with Ursuline athletics.  He is entering his 19th season as head coach for the Ursuline softball team and has compiled a 346-146 record.

His 2009 team was the Division III State Finalist.  His softball teams won seven district championships (including Ursuline’s first-ever appearance in 2002), four Steel Valley Conference titles and earned a winning record for 17 out of 18 seasons. 

Coach Kernan was an assistant Ursuline girls’ basketball coach from 2003-2008.  During that time, the team was the 2004 Division III State Champion and the 2006 Division III State Finalist.  Coach Kernan also had coaching stints at Campbell Memorial and Hubbard High Schools.

Kernan played for the Chaney Cowboys where he earned All-State and All-NEO honors in football (1983).  He earned All-City Series Honors in football and basketball (1983).  He was inducted in the Chaney High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. 

As a member of the Hiram College football team, he was named Team Defensive MVP (1985-87).  While at Hiram, Kernan earned All-President’s Athletic Conference Honors for football in 1985-1987.  He was a 1987 Pizza Hut All-American.  He was inducted into the 2005 Hiram College Athletic Hall of Fame.

He earned a bachelors degree in business management from Hiram College.  Following graduation, he was an auditor at Farmers National Bank, and later a computer programmer/systems analyst at Commercial Intertech before a career in the insurance and financial planning industry.  Kernan was the President and CEO of Kernan Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. from 1992 until his retirement in 2017.
