YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Animal Charity of Ohio suddenly finds itself overrun with cats rescued from an abandoned home just a couple of blocks from their office on Youngstown's South Side.
Animal Charity and Humane Society officials learned from social media posts that cats were starting to overrun the neighborhood surrounding a home at 4332 Helena Avenue.
On Wednesday morning, accompanied by a representative from city code enforcement, went to the home where they found at least 40 cats. Two or three of the cats had already died, and the others were living in conditions described as deplorable.
Investigators say a family moved from the home after the bank foreclosed on July 11, leaving the cats behind.
Authorities are concerned about feces and cat hair in the home, as well as fleas.
