LIBERTY, Ohio - The Liberty Township Police Department has sworn in a new K9 officer named in honor of fallen Girard Police Officer Justin Leo.

The department swore in K9 Officer Leo on Monday.  Judge Adler and Judge Cunning administered his oath of office, the department wrote in a Facebook post.

Liberty police say Leo is a dual purpose canine trained in narcotics detection, tracking as well as criminal apprehension, and will be assigned to second shift road patrol.

Leo’s handler, Officer Dave Rankin, has been with the police department for five years and is also the department’s firearm instructor.

Liberty police thanked all those who made donations to make this possible.

Officer Justin Leo was killed in the line of duty in October of 2017.
