The 10th annual Panerathon will be held on Sunday.

The Panerathon is a 10k walk/race and 2-mile fun run or walk that is held to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer.

The race will begin at Covelli Centre and end in Mill Creek Park.

Background of the event

The event started after Dr. Rashid Abdu's wife, Joanie Abdu, lost her fight against breast cancer in June 1994. After Abdu's wife died he promised that he would create a world-class breast cancer facility in her honor.

To date, the Panerathon has raised more than 2.5 million dollars for the Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley in support of The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Hospital, the first comprehensive breast care center in the Youngstown area.

In 2018, 12,000 participants, spectators, sponsors, and community supporters raised $525,000 through the 2018 Panerathon.
