The 10th annual Panerathon will be held on Sunday.
The Panerathon is a 10k walk/race and 2-mile fun run or walk that is held to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer.
The race will begin at Covelli Centre and end in Mill Creek Park.
Background of the event:
The event started after Dr. Rashid Abdu's wife, Joanie Abdu, lost her fight against breast cancer in June 1994. After Abdu's wife died he promised that he would create a world-class breast cancer facility in her honor.
To date, the Panerathon has raised more than 2.5 million dollars for the Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley in support of The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Hospital, the first comprehensive breast care center in the Youngstown area.
In 2018, 12,000 participants, spectators, sponsors, and community supporters raised $525,000 through the 2018 Panerathon.
Road Closures:
Those who are driving downtown and near Mill Creek Park will need to be aware of road closures.
There will also be several streets that are closed for the Panerathon.
- Price Road
- Price Road at the entrance of Fellows Riverside Gardens
- West Glacier Drive
- West Drive
- Slippery Rock Bridge
These Mill Creek MetroParks roads will be closed from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Sunday.
Where to park:
There will be a parking ban on all Panerathon route streets. There will be parking in the YMCA Parking Lot, the DOubleTree Parking lot, the Commerce Building Parking Lot, the IBM parking lot, A & C Beverage parking lot, MS Consultants Building lot, Ampco parking lot, City Centre parking lot and the USA Parking deck.
Emily Place on Freeman Court has limited access before 7:30 and afternoon.
Volunteers are also allowed to park in the Covelli Centre's
