It was a landmark day at the Canfield Fairgrounds as officials broke ground for an impressive new addition.

The ceremony on Wednesday marked the start of construction on what will be the new Canfield Fair Events Center.

Phase one will be a 3,500 square-foot building for the Junior Fair.

George Roman from the Canfield Fair Board says with the high ceilings; it will be able to hold equipment and fit things like RVs and boats for shows.

The indoor multiple-purpose center will also be available to rent for other events year-round.

"We're pretty confident that we're going to have a lot of people on the fairgrounds 12 months of the year," Roman said.

A capital campaign has raised $2.1 million so far toward a goal of $4 million to complete all four phases of the project.
