A member of the 21 News team received an award for her reporting.

21 News Midday anchor Jennifer Brindisi received the Public Children Services Association of Ohio's 2019 Outstanding Journalist of the Year Award Thursday.

The award recognizes Brindisi for her recurring segments covering issues related to child abuse, foster care, and adoptions.

In May 2017, Mahoning County Children Services launched a community outreach effort to increase the number of licensed foster parents.

To raise awareness for the need, Brindisi launched a monthly segment that evolved into a partnership with Mahoning County Children Services, the "Kids Matter Project."

The live five-minute segments air during 21 News Midday.

The monthly topics for the segments are determined in consultation with Mahoning County Children Services.

Some topics that have been discussed include holiday anxiety for foster and former foster youth, positive parenting tips, the opioid crisis, and kinship care.
