SHENANGO TWP., Mercer Co., Pa. - A report on the 12-car crash that happened Tuesday in Mercer County has been released.

According to the report, the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on I-80 near Shenango Township.

The crash and response happened during near white-out conditions along I-80, State Route 62 and State Route 318.

Reports say the westbound lanes were closed due to the crash.

Of the 12 vehicles involved, nine were commercial vehicles.

Police say the crash resulted from a tractor-trailer that was hauling vitamins and supplements jackknifing across the entire roadway.

According to the report, the second semi could not stop in time and hit the center of the trailer, splitting it in two and scattering cargo across the highway.

After the crash, other vehicles continued to hit the tractor-trailer due to the near whiteout conditions.

The crash caused road closures on I-80 westbound, and traffic backups reached 11 miles.

According to the report, ATV's were used by the West Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department to get to the injured victims.

A school bus was also used to transport crash victims to the Park Inn Hotel in West Middlesex.

Reports say a Greyhound bus became disabled after its brake lines froze, and another school bus was called in to transport nearly 20 people.

The interstate was reopened around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Multiple heavy wrecker services, front end loaders, and dump trucks had to be used to clear the highway.
