Poland High School and Springfield High School are separated by less than five miles, and both schools are in the football state semifinals.

Poland is in the final four for the first time since 1999 when they became the first team to go 15-0 and win the state championship, and Springfield is in the semis for the first time in school history.

This stretch of State Route 170 has become the "power" of high school football in the Mahoning Valley.

"It's pretty neat," said Poland Coach Ryan Williams. "I'm real proud of the guys in our two communities and just blessed to be part of it."

Springfield Coach Sean Gurriero, a Poland graduate, was equally impressed. "I graduated from there (Poland), and I'm happy for Coach Williams and the Bulldogs. It's a great experience that two schools are from State Route 170 are playing in the semi-finals."

Springfield plays Howard East Knox, Friday at Orrville High School.

Poland meets Licking Valley, Saturday at Paul Brown Stadium in Massillon.
