Students, teachers, and staff at the Greenville Area School District are mourning the loss of a classmate in a two-car crash in Mercer County.

The Mercer County Coroner tells 21 News that 17-year-old Elizabeth Spradlin of Greenville died when the car she was riding in pulled into the path of another car at the intersection of Greenville-Mercer Road and Fullingmill Road on Monday.

A sixteen-year-old girl was driving the car in which the 17-year-old victim, a senior at Greenville High School, was a passenger. A 65-year-old man was driving the other car.

Both drivers were taken to Grove City Medical Center with injuries investigators say did not appear to be life-threatening.  The coroner pronounced Spradlin dead at the scene as a result of blunt force trauma.

Grief counselors are available to students at the school.

Greenville Area School District Superintendent Brian Tokar issued the following statement:

“We are very sad to hear of the sudden loss of a member of the Greenville High School Senior Class who passed away last evening as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. We extend our most sincere sympathy and condolences to the student’s family and friends. Any time we lose a student it is a tragedy but this loss is even more impactful, given the Holiday season. The District aims to support our students and will have counselors available at school for any student that would benefit from their assistance. Please join us in keeping our student’s family and friends as well as the other individuals involved in the accident in your thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.”

Brian S. Tokar, Superintendent

Asked if anyone would be cited for the accident, Jefferson Township Police Chief Jeff Lockard told 21 News that the accident is still under investigation. Lockard says both drivers and Spradlin were wearing seat belts.
