A man on probation for a federal weapons violation was back in jail after police say he was found stealing facial products from Giant Eagle in Austintown.

Michael Malvasi, 57, was arrested Monday on charges of theft.

According to a police report, Austintown police were dispatched to Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue for a theft in progress.

Employees from the store stated they confronted the alleged thief and asked for the items back.

Loss prevention from the store said the suspect handed back various facial cleansers, serums, and lotions that were concealed in his coat.

Police say the store has been having problems with theft of those particular products because of their high dollar value.

The suspect fled after giving back the products, and police were able to track down the suspect's vehicle to Malvasi.

A warrant was placed for Malvasi's arrest, and he was apprehended at his home.

Malvasi was on probation for a 2017 federal weapons offense where investigators say Malvasi had an Interdynamic 9 mm semi-automatic pistol that was not registered to him.

Malvasi was prohibited from having the firearm and ammunition because of a 2011 conviction for tax evasion, according to court documents.

Malvasi was sentenced to five months in prison and three years probation after pleading guilty to the weapons charge.
