1995: Youngstown's new superintendent, Joseph Conley, is the son of Tennessee tenant farmers who came to Youngstown when he was 13 and was a standout athlete at the Rayen School. He says he wants Youngstown students to be able to compete with their suburban counterparts.

Four hundred fill New Bethel Baptist Church for the 12th annual community commemoration of the birth of civil rights martyr Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The San Diego Chargers stun the Steelers, 17-13, at Three Rivers Stadium for the AFC Championship and will meet the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl.

1980: Some 600 people attend a memorial service at St. Stephen Church for Robert "Bo" Rein,  standout athlete at Niles McKinley High School and Ohio State University who went on to coach football at North Carolina State and Louisiana State University. He died when his airplane crashed into the Atlantic while on a recruiting trip. Among those attending were Ohio State Coach Woody Hayes, Michigan Coach BoSchembechler, Arkansas Coach Lou Holtz, and Cleveland Browns Coach Sam Rutigliano.  

Robert Clark, 51, who operated the Casablanca Night Club at 600 Oak St., is found in the parking lot with fatal gunshot wounds. He was wearing a holstered pistol when ambushed. 

Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini wins his fifth professional fight by a first-round TKO over Dale Gordon at the Campbell Memorial Field House. 

1970: Thieves break into the home of Youngstown Patrolman David Aguilar's home on Roy Street while he was working and made off with jewelry, coins, guns, a television and a stereo.

A pall of smog and fog lay over the Mahoning River valley causing motorists to slow down and grope their way along city streets. 

Six Youngstown district high school seniors have been nominated by Rep. Frank Bow, R-16th, for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy: Donald Baret, Tadeusz Domanski, Robert Larsen, Dean Swift, Earle Baback and David Stanley.

1945: Burris Hunston, 20, youngest of three sons in the armed forces of Mayor and Mrs. Walter Hunston of East Palestine, is reported killed in action in France on Christmas Day. 

Mayor Ralph O'Neill issues a proclamation calling on all Youngstown war workers to pledge themselves to turn out as much war material as possible and stay on their jobs until the war is won.
