Leavittsburg filmmaker creates documentary about opioid crisis

LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio -
It's a film that revolves around the opioid crisis happening in our country, but it all takes place right here in Northeast Ohio.
A young filmmaker who graduated from LeBrae High School is nearing the release of his documentary.
"This film tells the stories of the people who are in the heart of the crisis," said Nate Powers.
"Death to Life" is a 50-minute documentary created by the 28-year-old.
He decided to create this film after a friend became addicted to pain killers.
He said this unique story of five individuals aims to show others that addiction is not a death sentence.
"I wanted to bring something to the table that took a different approach to that and shows that there can be hope for a future if the right choices are made. If you surround yourself with the right people, there can be hope for transformation. So we really highlight that, and we tell stories of hope and transformation," said Powers.
Powers added the people highlighted in the film are all from Northeast Ohio and the Valley, but it's an epidemic consuming thousands of others all over.
He's hoping the true emotional stories of these survivors and fighters will help more than just those in the area.
"Twenty-three states in our country experienced a significant rise in opioid overdoses last year. And so this is something that people all over the county can relate to. We are pushing this into festivals all over, and we see this potentially getting picked up with a distribution deal or ending up on some streaming service like Netflix or Amazon," said Powers. "So this has really like, become like a mission for me. I want to change people's hearts on this issue."
"Death to Life" will premiere for the first and only time here in the Valley.
The screening will be open to the public on Sunday, January 26th, at Life Church in Leavittsburg.
The doors will open at 6 p.m.
They're hoping to raise some money to help the film be entered into film festivals all over the county.
