EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio (AP) - With the devastating wildfires in Australia, there have been some amazing ways people have raised money and donations for the people and animals who have lost their homes.

North Elementary First Graders held a "Pennies for Australian Wildfire" fundraiser to help with the rehabilitation of some of their wildlife affected by the fires.

With the help of students and people in the East Liverpool community, it took just ten days to raise $1,920.

Jaime Fredritz, North Elementary School 1st grade teacher, said, "Kids love doing it. Each day they ask when we can go collect our pennies or when can we count our pennies. We're really being really kind to somebody, and they were excited to be helpful and to give back."

This fundraiser led to students improving their math skills by counting and adding up the coins each day in class.

The students were also able to learn more about Australian culture.

Teachers at North Elementary were even able to teach different lessons about the different wildlife in the country.

The money raised resulted in a message right from an Australia Zoo.

The staff from the zoo expressed their thanks and support in their message to the first graders at the Valley elementary school.
