1995: The American Political Science Association notifies a group of local political scientists that a paper on the struggle in 1994 between then-chairman of the Democratic Party Don L. Hanni Jr. and his challenger, Michael Morley, has been accepted for delivery at the association's convention in Chicago.
Ted Pedas, director of the Farrell Area School District Planetarium, and long-time professor and administrator at Youngstown State University says he became interested in astronomy in October 1957 when he was taking astronomy elective at YSU and the Russians launched Sputnik.
The Boardman Board of Education will reimburse the township $5,443 for the 315 hours that police officer Clint Burchfield spends in classrooms as the district's DARE anti-drug officer.
1980: Paul Dobos, a 20-year-old Navy seaman, is home in Campbell after his life was saved by brain surgery for injuries suffered in a fall on Midway Island. A neurosurgeon in Hawaii talked a general practitioner, Dr. Paul Bliss, through the surgery.

1970: In little less than a week, the mid-winter thaw has poured 25.8 billion gallons of water into the district's largest lakes and reservoirs. Meander Reservoir, source of Youngstown's water supply, saw a 29 percent increase in its reserves.
Police say the 10- and 4-year-old sons of Joanne Wright saw two of their great-aunts strangle their mother to death in their Farrell, Pa., home on Jan. 21. One aunt has been arrested and a warrant issued for the other.
