COLUMBUS, Ohio - The number of flu hospitalizations in Ohio rose again last week.

According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), there were 994 hospitalizations from February 2nd to February 8th.

That number is a 19 percent increase over the previous week.

ODH says there have been 5,457 total hospitalizations since the end of September, and that is more than double the number during the same week last year.

“One in 12 Americans is likely to get sick from flu this season,” said ODH Medical Director Mark Hurst, MD. “The next person hospitalized could be you, your child, or another loved one. Protect yourself and everyone around you by getting a flu shot and following other precautions.”

According to the release, adult flu deaths are not reported to ODH, but there were two Ohio girls, ages 11 and 16, that have died from the flu during this flu season.

ODH says the flu is especially dangerous to the very young or elderly and those with chronic health conditions.

ODH says these tips can help prevent the flu:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth after touching objects.
• Practice good habits, including disinfecting surfaces, getting plenty of sleep, and managing stress.
• Stay home when you are sick.

Symptoms of the flu typically start one to four days after exposure and include fever, runny nose, sore throat, aches, and fatigue.
