JAMESTOWN, Pa. -

The Jamestown High School basketball team is mourning the loss of one of their own. The coach said 18-year-old senior captain Darian Keyser died unexpectedly in his sleep Sunday night.

“It is shocking, completely unexpected,” said coach Lucas Widger.

Widger said everyone is in shock. In the wake of the news, Keyser’s teammates wanted to be together Monday, so they went to the local playground and started shooting hoops.

“The family and the bonds you form out there— it’s like losing a big brother.”

Keyser recently scored his 1,000th career point, and the assist came from his brother, a freshman on the team.

“He was a quiet leader but very competitive and as a basketball player at 6’6”— he could dribble and shoot outside,” said Widger.

“He was the kind of kid when you are ready to wrap up practice it was tough to get him to leave (because) he would want to take a couple more shots. He just wanted to get better and be as good as he could possibly be.”

Keyser had committed to play basketball at Geneva College and was going to major in sports management.

“He was really looking forward to what his future was going to hold.”

Widger described Keyser as a hard worker who always asked what he could do better, especially after they lost games.

The team’s next game is the district championship on February 28.

Zachary Stitt, an assistant basketball coach at Geneva College, sent out a tweet Monday that read, “Absolutely heartbroken after hearing the news this afternoon. Just talked to Darian yesterday morning. Gave me some encouraging words and couldn’t stop talking about how excited he was to be joining our family next year. Please keep the Keyser family in your prayers #RIPDarian.”
