COLUMBIANA, Ohio - Police have identified the man killed in a train accident early Sunday morning in Columbiana.

Chief Tim Gladis said 36-year-old Daniel J. Shirley was driving a Ford Fusion when a passenger train struck his car at the Elm Street crossing in Columbiana.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad reports the collision happened just before 1:30 a.m.

The chief said police were notified by the train company, Norfolk Southern that they did not see Shirley's vehicle, but that the gates were operating properly.

He was the only one in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

No one on the train reported any injuries.

Debris from the crash was reportedly scattered on the scene, reaching a fourth of a mile away from the site.

Several agencies, including the Columbiana Fire Department, the county coroner's office, and railroad officials, helped police on the scene.

An investigation into the crash is still underway as police expect to go through the vehicle and retrieve the black box.

They are also looking into how Shirley ended up on the tracks.

A coroner's report awaits preliminary results of a toxicology screen.

“A tragedy like this profoundly affects the Shirley family. Our Columbiana community is mourning this loss of life and our hearts go out to Mr. Shirley’s family and friends. We ask for patience and support as we go through all investigative steps. It will take time to properly vet all the information and we regret that the process can be painful for loved ones," said Chief Gladis.
