1995: Mission specialist Ron Parise of Warren, a graduate of Youngstown State University, arrives at Kennedy Space Center with other astronauts to prepare for the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approves an agreement that will eliminate toll calls between the Cortland exchange of the United Telephone Co. and the Youngstown and Niles exchanges of Ameritech Ohio.
Dr. Mary Beaubien, professor of human ecology at Youngstown State University, says some welfare recipients without work experience will need an orientation to basic work habits, "because they have never lived in a family where anyone worked."
1980: Visiting Judge A. Ross Silverling of Ashland County says Youngstown City Council aides must take a civil service test to qualify for their jobs because council obviously created the aides' jobs, which pay $8,500, to circumvent the city charter's $600 per year salary for councilmen. Since the 1960s, councilmen have typically appointed their wives as their aides.
The Youngstown area is being hard hit by the B-type flu that hit much of the state earlier, says Dr. Robert Wiltsie, vice president of medical affairs at the Youngstown Hospital Association.
A 39-year-old Albert Street man is fined $105 by Municipal Judge Frank X. Kryzan and given a suspended 30-day jail sentence after pleading no contest to charges of drunken driving and driving the wrong way on I-680.
1970: The Mahoning County Republican Central Committee votes 43 to 36 against making endorsements in the party primary, rejecting endorsements proposed by Party Chairman Elton Luckhart.
Two area Scouts are honored by Goodwill Industries for filling the most bags in their divisions in the Goodwill Day program. Gary Pennington of Troop 92 at St. John the Baptist Church in Campbell is the top Boy Scout and Rick Pratt of Pack 53 at Market Street Elementary led the Cub Scouts.
Marshall Gurd, 48, of Beaver Township, injured in a two-car collision in South Avenue, dies in South Side Hospital.
1945: Pfc. Paul Motosky, 21, of Indianola Avenue, is reported killed in action in Luzon.
Elementary school students in Mahoning County will be eligible to participate in waste paper collection contests sponsored by The Vindicator.
While Youngstown traffic slithered on icy pavements, Pittsburgh, East Liverpool and Ohio River communities prepare for floods. Flood warnings are issued along the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati.
