Slippery Rock University student recovering after falling at state park

A Slippery Rock University student, who fell 80 feet off a cliff at a state park in Lawrence County Sunday, is out of the hospital and was back home recovering Wednesday night. 21 News spoke with Jocie Van Kirk about that scary accident and her injuries.
It was a nice sunny day on Sunday when Slippery Rock University senior Jocie Van Kirk and three of her friends decided to go hiking at McConnells Mill State Park.
"I was like, yeah, we hiked the trail before, so it wasn't anything where like it was new to me. I knew the trail, but just an accident, unfortunately, happened," Van Kirk explained.
An accident that sent her tumbling 80 feet off of a cliff, stopping at the bottom near the creek.
"I'm not like 100 percent sure whether I missed the footing or what. I do remember I knew it was a point where you had to be cautious and everything, so I was trying to be careful. So I don't know whether it was a moment where my foot just slipped on some leaves, or I just missed some kind of step," she said.
A rescue basket had to be used, and then she was flown to a hospital, but her friends and others who saw it happen rushed to her side.
"Got a ton of people to help just get me up there, and I couldn't thank them enough for all that."
She spent only a few days in the hospital for a fracture in her neck, a fracture in her spine, and two fractures in her pelvis. Now she is home with a neck brace and a walker dealing with the pain, but she also feels very lucky.
"I know there could have been way worse injuries, and to have something where I was home within a few days and don't need surgeries, it's a great feeling."
Jocie says it has been a struggle going from a normal life to now needing help walking and getting up out of bed right now. She is undergoing physical and occupational therapy.
