United Way of Lawrence Co. asking for donations to COVID-19 fund

Lawrence county, Pa - The United Way of Lawrence County has announced a special fundraising campaign to support those most vulnerable to the coronavirus.
According to the release, the Lawrence County Commissioners were the first to donate to the COVID-19 relief fund with a $5,000 donation.
All of the proceeds raised will be distributed through community nonprofits partners that are responding to the needs of local families.
"The coronavirus is not just a health threat, but an economic one as well. The "Shelter in Place" precaution mandated by Governor Wolf and the CDC best practices and social distancing have disrupted our lives in serious ways. The United Way, in collaboration with the board of directors, recognized the need to act swiftly and strategically to provide a collective community fund as we prepare for short-term and long-term impact on our local community," stated Terri Stramba, President United Way of Lawrence County.
Forty-two percent of people in Lawrence County live in poverty or in ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed). Most of these people live paycheck to paycheck, and the disruptions to their employment can cause them financial hardships.
The United Way of Lawrence County believes they will see an increase in requests for assistance as these families may lose wages and lack basic needs.
Those in need of assistance can call 211 or text your zipcode to 898-211.
The United Way is asking that anyone who can donate to the COVID-19 fund to do so through their website or by mailing contributions to United Way of Lawrence County 223 North Mercer Street, New Castle, PA 16101.
