200 coronavirus cases reported at Valley long-term care facilities

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Health Department of Health reports that 200 residents and staff members at 19 long-term care facilities in the Mahoning Valley have been infected with the coronavirus.
The numbers are included in the state health department’s web page that compiles information provided by local health departments.
As of Tuesday, the site reported that 93 residents and 65 staff members had tested positive for COVID-19 at 14 facilities in Mahoning County.
Four long-term care facilities in Trumbull County had 19 residents and 6 staff members test positive for the virus.
The only facility to report in Columbiana County, Salem West Nursing Home, reported 16 residents and one staff member had tested positive.
The list does not include information on the number of deaths related to COVID-19 at each facility.
As of Friday, Columbiana County health officials reported 22 confirmed cases and five deaths in local long-term facilities. However, the health department did not name that facility, or facilities.
The case counts reflect current cases of COVID-19 among facility staff and residents reported to the Ohio Department of Health as of April 21, 2020. The totals do not include patients or staff who have recovered or passed away prior to the report, according to the department of health.

State health officials say the case number information does not replace a conversation with facility staff about their current infection control practices and mitigation strategies.
The Ohio Department of Health suggests the following questions that families might ask a care facility:
What are you doing currently to protect residents from COVID-19?
What precautions do you take when you do identify a person who is symptomatic of COVID-19?
How are families kept apprised of changes related to your infection control policies?
The health department also said that the presence of COVID-19 at a facility is not an indicator of a facility that is not following proper procedures.
Families should always feel free to ask questions of the facility where their loved one resides, and if not satisfied, contact their local ombudsman, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
