Recycling centers have seen a rise in usage since curbside pickup was suspended across the area, but now instead of glass, aluminum, and paper many have noticed a rise in PPE materials in recycling bins.

"This is causing problems at our sorting facilities those tags get clogged up," says Kim Lewis with the Green Team of the Mahoning County.

Lewis says contamination from PPE materials is a huge concern at recycling centers, and while it's important to use PPE materials, Lewis adds it's just as important that we dispose of it correctly.

"If you have the disposable gloves you just simply put them in the trash, after each use put them in the trash and make sure the lid is closed on that receptacle. "

Other items like masks and wipes should be disposed as well and in the case of wipes, never attempt to flush them. Lewis says to help cut down on litter, a reusable cloth mask is best.

"The best mask, I have one right here, a reusable cloth mask and you can wear it over and over and over again making sure you wash it in-between wears."

Lewis adds that PPE materials at recycling centers haven't been a major issue but if not stopped now, she believes it could become a major problem going forward.
