YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The name of a priest who served in several Valley parishes has been removed from a list of clergy members that the Youngstown Diocese said had been subject to credible allegations of child sex abuse.

After further investigation and new information, the Diocese announced on Monday that allegations made earlier against William Smaltz are no longer deemed to be credible and substantiated.

As a result, the Diocese has removed Smaltz’s name from a  list of clergy "against whom credible, substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor have been made."

In November 2018, Smaltz was on a list of thirty-one priests who the Dioces said had been accused over the previous 75 years.

According to the Diocese, Smaltz had been assigned to St. Mary, Massillon, St. Edward, Youngstown, Our Lady of Lourdes, E. Palestine, and St. Mary Parish, Conneaut.

A spokesman for the Diocese tells 21 News that Smaltz left the active ministry several years ago.
