As warmer weather approaches, many people are gearing up for a summer most likely spent at home due to coronavirus concerns. However, that certainly isn't stopping them from having the "staycation" they've always wanted.

Home-leisure stores like The Great Escape in Boardman are allowing people to create their own vacations in their backyards with pools, spas and patio furniture. With so many more people buying for at-home fun this summer, business is actually booming during this pandemic.

Steve Kopkash, the store manager at the Boardman Great Escape location says their pool sales doubled in the month of March compared to last year, and sales haven't slowed since.

"It started off with pools and spas," he said. "They've all increased. Everybody's planning on staying at home this summer because of the uncertainty of when you can travel, or if you can travel. The first week after the shut down order went in, it was a little touch-and-go. Then I think everybody kind of got their footing and realized what they wanted to do."

With family gatherings likely approaching as the state re-opens, it seems pool parties won't go away this summer. Filomena Riccioni just purchased a new pool from Great Escape, saying now was definitely the best time.

"We decided to upgrade," she said. "Get it bigger and better because more family members and more friends definitely want to join in. You want friends and family. There's a connection that's lost right now, and a pool is a great way to bring that back."

The business surge is expected to continue, as those who already have their dream backyard prepare it for use, and prepare it for guests.

"Pool chemicals are going to be the next thing," Kopkash added. "People are going to start opening up their existing pools. Patio furniture is all year [as well]. Those are really outdoor living areas now, so people are kind of expanding on that and really adding stuff to it."
