Newton Falls remembers city's fallen officers

In the midst of this pandemic, a small group paused in Newton Falls to remember officers killed in the line of duty.
"Always letting them know how much we respect and appreciate them, but most importantly, keeping them healthy, keeping them safe and bringing them home to their families," said Newton Falls Mayor Kenneth Kline during a prayer.
Police Chief Gene Fixler making special note of two former Newton Falls officers that made the ultimate sacrifice.
"He came into work that morning, the same way I came into work this morning with the expectation to go home but he also had a duty to protect the citizens of Newton Falls," said Fixler while speaking about Chief Scott Vasbinder.
Vasbinder was killed in July 1932.
"Unfortunately, it was a gunfight, it was two against one and he never made it home," explained Fixler.
Another fallen Newton Falls officer is Cleo Sheely. Sheely suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty and then crashed his marked cruiser, according to Fixler.
These two names are now forever a part of Newton Falls history.
And while a memorial in Chief Vasbinder's name is located at the city's Veterans Park. The name and date on that memorial may not be quite right.
"It's possibly a nickname, we're not really sure. The monument says, Charles Vasbinder. His name is Scott Vasbinder," said Fixler.
And whether its seen as a way to right a wrong, there is now talk of a new memorial. One that would be located at the corner of Center and Broad and bare the names of the city's two fallen officers.
The small memorial service was held on National Peace officers Memorial Day.
