7 17 Credit Union dishes out $18,000 in local scholarships

7 17 Credit Union awarded 12 $1,500 scholarships to area students pursuing a post-secondary education as a part of their annual scholarship program.
Eight university scholarships were awarded based on grade point average and school and community involvement. Recipients were chosen by, and will attend the following universities: Youngstown State University, The University of Akron, Kent State University Main Campus and Kent State University's regional campuses. All of the scholarship recipients are members or children of members of 7 17.
The 2020 university scholarships winners are: Brandon Frasca, who is graduating from Lakeview High School and will attend The University of Akron to study computer engineering; Noah Jones, who is graduating from LaBrae High School and will attend The University of Akron to study aerospace engineering; Kalena Speicher, who is graduating from Newton Falls High School and will attend Kent State University to study biochemistry; Zachary Jewell, who is graduating from United Local High School and will attend Kent State University to study sports administration/business management; Matthew C. Miller, who is graduating from Southeast High School and will attend Kent State University Trumbull Campus to study zoology; Alexandria Platt, who is graduating from Warren G. Harding High School and will attend Kent State University Trumbull Campus to study radiology; Ashley Lytle, who is graduating from Warren John F. Kennedy High School and will attend Youngstown State University to study psychology and criminal justice; and Haeden Gump, who is graduating from Girard High School and will attend Youngstown State University to study mechanical engineering.
In addition to the university scholarships, 7 17 awarded four $1,500 scholarships that illustrate our commitment to developing good financial habits early.
Two awards were given to members of the Credit Union's "cha-ching" Teen Club and can be used by the students to further their education at any accredited university or trade school. Scholarship applications are evaluated primarily on a written essay.
The 2020 "cha-ching" scholarship winners are: Kasey Sheridan, who is graduating from Girard High School and will attend Cleveland State University to study communications; and Abigail R. Langmeyer, who will graduate from Lakeview High School and will attend Youngstown State University to study nursing.
7 17 also awarded two scholarships to members of our young adult program, the edge Club, which was designed to meet the unique needs of 18 to 25 year-olds. This program was developed to build upon the financial products and services offered to our "cha-ching" members as they become more independent and begin to make more financial decisions on their own.
Like the "cha-ching" Teen Club awards, the edge scholarships are available for use at any accredited university or trade school. the edge applicants were also evaluated on their academic success and community commitment, and were also asked to write a short essay.
The 2020 the edge winners are: Kristen Henderson who will graduate from Ursuline High School and will attend Youngstown State University to study exercise science pre-physical therapy; and Jason Roussos, who will graduate from Boardman High School and will attend Ohio State University to study computer science.
Scholarship applications for the 2021-2022 academic year can be downloaded in the fall at www.717cu.com/scholarships and will be available in all high school guidance offices in the communities 7 17 serves starting in October 2020. Applications for the 2021-2022 academic year are due to the credit union by March 1, 2021.
