After 130 years in business, GE sells lighting division

CLEVELAND, Ohio - General Electric, which once employed hundreds of people in the Valley, has sold its lighting business.
GE announced on Wednesday that it signed an agreement to sell its lighting division to Savant Systms Inc., which will continue to use the General Electric name.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
GE has been making lamps and other lighting for 130 years at plants around the country, including six plants in Youngstown, Austintown, Warren, and Niles.
GE closed its only remaining lamp plant in Warren in 2014 after 123 years in business. In the 1970s the Warren Lamp Plant employed nearly 1,200.
The plant was closed after GE said the plant experienced a steady decline in volume as customers shifted from the bulbs made here to more energy-efficient lighting products.
GE says the sale of its lighting division will allow it to focus on other parts of its business.
GE Lighting will remain headquartered in Cleveland, and its more than 700 employees will transfer to Savant upon completion of the transaction.
