Warren man sentenced for holding woman, kids hostage last year

WARREN, Ohio - A man who police say held a woman and their three children hostage last year has been sentenced to the maximum time for each charge.
Judge Ronald Rice sentenced Shawn Michael Riley Wednesday to 65 to 97-and-a-half years in prison, with 65 being the minimum he can serve and 97 being the maximum.
Riley must also register as a Tier 3 child victim-oriented offender as well as a violent offender. Prosecutor Gabriel Wildman said Judge Rice sentenced him the maximum amount for each charge.
Last year, the woman and kids were held for a nearly four-hour-long ordeal.
The mom told police she was sitting on the porch of her Warren apartment when Riley ordered her to go inside.
The police report stated that Riley pulled out a pocket knife and dragged her by the hair into the apartment.
The woman told officers that Riley put his daughters into a bedroom before cutting her face with a knife. The woman said Riley pushed her down, ripped off her pants and forced her to remove her shirt.
When police arrived at the apartment, they had to force the door open because a sofa blocked it.
Police said Riley dragged the woman onto a stairway holding a knife at her throat and warning officers if they came up the stairs, they would "see things they would not want to see."
The woman said Riley dragged her back into the bedroom where she was punched half-a-dozen times and kicked with Riley's steel-toed boots about three times.
Ultimately, members of the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team got Riley to release the children and their mother.
