The Southern Park Mall and Washington Prime Group hosted it's first Free Cinema Under the Stars event Thursday evening.

More than 200 cars filled the JCPenny parking lot turning it into a drive- in style movie theater.

"We've got a big projector that's just going to throw it up on the wall of Penny's, it's a 45 foot wide screen and 23 feet tall and it's high definition," said General Manager Brian Gabbert. "Audio will be broadcast over a radio station. And it should be a great production."

Thursday marked the first of a series of screenings debuting with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Friday, June 19: "Raiders of the Lost Ark" will play.
Saturday, June 20: "The Lego Batman Movie" will show and Sunday, June 21: "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" will close out the four day stretch.

"Everybody has been locked in their houses and there are so many things we haven't been able to do recently and now that retail has opened up again we just want to provide something fun that people can get out and do bring your family," said Gabbert.

Concession stands were up and running so movie goers could fill up on popcorn and other treats and get comfortable in their vehicle for the show.

"We are still able to keep social distancing because people are able to stay inside of their car," stated Gabbert. "It's great for the family."

The series will run through June 21, weather permitting. Guests can secure their free tickets in advance online. Cars are admitted into the parking lot starting at 8 p.m. and the movie will begin at approximately 9 p.m.
