Giant Eagle recalls some salads over parasite contamination concern
WASHINGTON - Giant Eagle has announced the recall of some bagged salads over concerns that they may be contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that can cause illness.
The recall is linked to a Fresh Express recall involving a potential link between those salad products produced at a Streamwood IL facility and distributed to Giant Eagle, Walmart, Aldi, and other stores primarily in Midwest states. As of Sunday, Walmart and Aldi recalls did not apply to stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania. However, the FDA is continuing the investigation,
Giant Eagle has published the following list of recalled products:

Giant Eagle says customers who have purchased the affected products should dispose of them or bring in the receipt to their local Giant Eagle or Market District to receive a refund on their purchase.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis begin an average of 7 days (range, 2 days to ≥2 weeks) after the ingestion of sporulated oocysts (the infective form of the parasite).
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis may include the following:
- Watery diarrhea (most common)
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Increased gas
- Nausea
- Fatigue
Other symptoms that may occur but are less common include the following:
- Vomiting
- Low-grade fever
If a person ill from cyclosporiasis is not treated, symptoms can persist for several weeks to a month or more. Some symptoms, such as diarrhea, can return; and some symptoms, such as fatigue, may continue after the gastrointestinal symptoms have gone away. The infection usually is not life-threatening. Some infected persons do not have any symptoms, particularly persons from areas where cyclosporiasis is endemic, such as tropical and subtropical regions.
ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salads involved in the recall were sold in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Recalled Walmart brand Marketside Classic Iceberg Salads were sold in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
