With the 4th of July holiday weekend coming up, there is an added risk for senior citizens because many families plan to celebrate.

A new medical study from Oak Street Health revealed 91% of senior citizens practice social distancing and wear masks or gloves when in public.

Dr. Olaoluwa Fayanju, Oak Street Health Senior Medical Director, says the upcoming holiday weekend brings higher precautions.

"After Mother's Day, there were spikes in a number of locations around the country due to people ignoring some of the physical and social distancing recommendations that were in place," Fayanju said.

The study surveyed 1,000 adults who were 65 years old or older about the personal precautions they are planning on taking in the next phase of the pandemic. The survey also studied seniors outlook on the next phase.

The study showed 91% of seniors surveyed practiced social distancing and wore either a mask and/ or gloves in public.

More than 80% of seniors plan to continue their practices for staying safe.

Firework shows that are still happening this Saturday, like the Canfield Fairgrounds, are requiring the audience to stay in their cars to limit congregating.

"That to some degree protects people from being in contact with people outside of their household," said Fayanju.

Fayanju said people with chronic illness and compromised immune systems should be cautious during their holiday celebrations.

"Until we have a reliable vaccine for this disease,"  Fayanju said, "we're gonna have to change our lives and adjust our lives."
